Where Carpeep and Motorscan differ.

Motorscan is run by MS Motoring Limited and splits its UK vehicle check into two halves. The free half covers DVLA specification, full MOT history since 2005, recorded mileage, tax and SORN status, CO2 band and Clean Air Zone compliance. The paid half adds the provenance data: outstanding finance through Experian, insurance write-off category, Police National Computer stolen markers and MIAFTR records.

That paid check costs £10.99 for one vehicle. Buy in bulk and the rate drops to £6.49 each for five, £5.50 each for ten and £4.50 each on the fifty check package. The credits sit in a Motorscan account and stay valid for 24 months. It is a sensible structure if you are viewing car after car over a long search.

Carpeep works the other way round. There is one report at £15, it contains everything Carpeep holds, and there is nothing above it to buy. No tiers, no packs, no account and no credits to redeem before they lapse. If you are checking one or two cars and want the whole record in a single document, that is the trade Carpeep makes.

What Motorscan offers

Two tiers, bulk packs and a wide set of extra tools, read from its own site.

A real free tier

The free check lists 25+ data points: make, model, colour, engine size, fuel type, year, full MOT history and recorded mileage since 2005, tax and SORN status, CO2 emissions and band, V5C update time, an export marker and a mileage clocking alert. Motorscan states no sign-up is needed.

The paid full check

Upgrading adds outstanding finance through Experian, insurance write-off category, stolen markers from the Police National Computer, MIAFTR records, salvage and scrapped history, plate and colour changes, import and export status and previous keeper count. Motorscan quotes 50+ data points and a £30,000 data guarantee.

Multi-check packs

Five checks cost £32.45, ten cost £54.95, twenty five cost £124.99 and fifty cost £224.99. That takes the rate from £6.49 down to £4.50 a check. Packs are valid for 24 months, and the fifty check tier is listed as contact for quote.

Apps and extra tools

Motorscan has iOS and Android apps, an ANPR check that scans a plate with your phone camera, and a Motorscore summary score. It also lists running costs, insurance group, askMID insurance status, ULEZ and Clean Air Zone compliance and an ex-taxi and ex-police check.

Why buyers pick Carpeep

One price, one report, nothing held back for a higher tier.

One flat £15

No free tier to upgrade from, no pack to pre-buy and no paid extras at checkout. The £15 report contains every check Carpeep runs, so there is never a question about which version you bought.

No account, no credits

Carpeep needs no sign-up and holds no balance. Nothing sits in a wallet waiting to be redeemed, and nothing expires after 24 months if your car search ends sooner than you expected.

Mileage from every MOT

Carpeep reads the mileage recorded at every MOT and analyses it for discrepancies, alongside the full test history and advisories, so you can see exactly where a reading dropped or jumped.

Every marker in one document

Outstanding finance, write-off categories including legacy Cat C and D, police stolen markers, keeper history and change dates, plate transfers, colour changes, import, export, scrapped markers, VIN cross-reference and tax status.

Where Motorscan is the better pick

The free tier is genuinely useful, and it is larger than Carpeep's. Motorscan gives away 25+ data points including full MOT history, mileage at every test, tax and SORN status, CO2 band and Clean Air Zone compliance, with no sign-up. If all you need is the MOT and tax record, use it and pay nobody, including us.

Bulk buyers should also do the maths. Ten Motorscan checks cost £54.95, which is £5.50 a car, and the fifty pack works out at £4.50. If you are viewing a long shortlist or buying to trade, that beats £15 a report. Motorscan also has iOS and Android apps, camera plate scanning, running costs, insurance group and askMID insurance status, none of which Carpeep offers.

How a Carpeep check works

1

Enter the registration

Type the plate into the box above. Carpeep matches it against DVLA records and shows the make, model, colour, year and engine size so you can confirm it is the right car before paying.

2

Check it against the advert

Compare what Carpeep found with what the seller wrote. A colour or engine size that does not match the listing is worth asking about before you travel to view the car.

3

Pay £15 once

One payment, no sign-up and no account. There are no tiers to choose between, no bundle to size up and nothing extra offered at checkout.

4

Read the full record

Finance, write-offs, stolen markers, mileage analysis, keeper history and identity checks arrive in one report, backed by the £30,000 data guarantee.

Where our data comes from.

Always from official records. We do not create, edit or estimate any data.

DVLA

Registration, keeper history, import and export status and recorded vehicle details.

DVSA

Full MOT test history including results, advisories and mileage at each test.

Insurance industry records

Recorded write-off markers such as Cat A, B, S and N from insurance industry records.

UK finance lenders

Outstanding finance agreements including HP, PCP and conditional sale records.

Police stolen vehicle records

Stolen vehicle markers from UK police records, checked against the registration and VIN.

Vehicle identity checks

VIN and registration cross-referenced to flag plate changes, cloning or identity mismatches.

Motorscan alternative FAQs

Is Carpeep cheaper than Motorscan?

Not on a single check. Motorscan lists one full check at £10.99 against Carpeep at £15, and its bulk packs go lower still, down to £4.50 a check on the fifty pack. What Carpeep offers instead is one flat price for one complete report, with no tiers and no upgrades. Prices checked on 3 September 2026.

What does the Motorscan free check show?

Motorscan lists 25+ free data points: make, model, colour, engine size, fuel type, year, full MOT history and recorded mileage since 2005, tax and SORN status, CO2 emissions and band, V5C update time, an export marker and a mileage clocking alert. Finance, write-off and stolen checks sit behind the paid upgrade.

Does Carpeep have a free check too?

Yes, but a smaller one. The free Carpeep reg lookup returns make, model, colour, year, fuel type, engine size, MOT status and tax or SORN status. Finance, write-off, stolen markers, mileage analysis and keeper history all sit inside the £15 report. Motorscan gives away more at the free stage.

Do Motorscan multi-check credits expire?

Yes. Motorscan lists its five, ten, twenty five and fifty check packages as valid for 24 months. If your search finishes early, any unused checks lapse at that point. Carpeep sells single reports only, so there is no balance to run down and no deadline to redeem anything by.

Do both cover insurance write-off categories?

Yes. Motorscan lists Cat A, B, S and N drawn from MIAFTR. Carpeep covers Cat A, B, S and N plus the legacy Cat C and Cat D markers used before October 2017, which still sit on the record of plenty of older cars. A write-off marker stays on a vehicle permanently and should be reflected in the asking price.

Does Carpeep give a valuation or running costs?

No. Carpeep does not carry valuations, service history, insurance groups, ULEZ status, recalls or estimated running costs. Motorscan lists running costs, insurance group and Clean Air Zone checks, so if those matter to you it is the better fit. Carpeep covers provenance: finance, write-offs, theft, mileage and vehicle identity.

Do I need an account to use Carpeep?

No. There is no sign-up, no password and no stored balance. Enter a registration, confirm the vehicle matches the advert, pay £15 and read the report. Motorscan runs customer accounts at my.motorscan.co.uk, which is where its multi-check credits are held and later redeemed against a plate.

Which one should I use?

Run a free check on either site first, because the MOT and tax record costs nothing anywhere. If you are buying one car and want the whole provenance record in a single document with nothing held back, Carpeep is £15 flat. If you are working through a long shortlist, Motorscan bulk packs cost less per vehicle.
