What is a free tax check?

A free tax check lets you instantly look up any UK vehicle's tax status using just the registration number. You can see whether the vehicle is currently taxed, when the tax is due, the current MOT status and basic vehicle details.

Tax data comes directly from the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency). It shows the live tax status as recorded on their systems, including whether a vehicle has a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) declared.

Why check tax status before buying a used car?

If a vehicle you're looking at is untaxed or has a SORN, it could mean the car has been off the road for some time. Vehicles left sitting can develop mechanical problems, and an untaxed car may signal the seller is in a hurry to move it on.

However, tax status alone only tells you whether the current keeper is paying vehicle tax. It doesn't check for outstanding finance, theft markers, write-off history or other risks that a full vehicle history check can reveal.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check if a car is taxed?

Enter the registration number into the free tax checker at the top of this page. You'll instantly see whether the vehicle is taxed, when the tax is due, its MOT status and basic vehicle details.

Is this tax check free?

Yes. The Carpeep tax check is completely free with no signup required. Enter any UK registration number to check the vehicle's tax status at no cost.

What does a tax check show?

A tax check shows whether the vehicle is currently taxed, untaxed or has a SORN declared. It also shows the tax due date, MOT status, MOT expiry date and basic vehicle details including make, colour, fuel type and engine size.

What does SORN mean?

SORN stands for Statutory Off Road Notification. It means the vehicle has been declared off the road by its keeper. A vehicle with a SORN cannot legally be driven on public roads and does not need to be taxed or have an MOT while it remains off the road.

What's the difference between a tax check and a full vehicle history check?

A tax check shows the vehicle's current tax and MOT status only. A full vehicle history check also reveals outstanding finance, theft records, insurance write-offs, keeper changes, mileage discrepancies, import/export history and scrapped status. If you're buying a used car, both checks are recommended.
