What does the free car valuation show?

Everything below is free. No payment and no account.

  • The car

Its make, model and year, from the registration.

  • Average market value

What similar cars are advertised for: the middle of the market.

  • Low to high range

The lower and upper end of what similar cars are advertised for.

  • Real adverts

Compared with cars of the same model, age and mileage for sale in the UK.

Where there aren’t enough similar cars for sale to value a car reliably, we say so rather than guess.

How is the valuation worked out?

We look up the car from its registration, using DVLA and DVSA records for its make, model, fuel and age, and its MOT history for the mileage.

We then compare it with similar cars advertised for sale in the UK: the same make and model, with a similar engine, age and mileage. Prices are adjusted for the differences in age and mileage, and unusual adverts are left out. The average is the middle of what is left, and the low and high figures show the lower and upper end.

The valuation assumes a clean history and average condition. Outstanding finance, an insurance write-off or a theft record can change what a car is worth.

Car valuation FAQs

Is the car valuation free?

Yes. Enter a registration to see an estimated market value. There is no charge, and you don’t need an account or card details.

How is the valuation worked out?

We compare the car with similar cars advertised for sale in the UK: the same make and model, of a similar age and mileage. The average is the middle of those prices, and the low and high figures show the lower and upper end.

Where does the mileage come from?

From the car’s MOT history held by DVSA. We estimate today’s mileage from the latest recorded reading.

Is this what a dealer will pay for my car?

Not usually. The valuation is based on the prices cars are advertised for. Part-exchange and trade offers are normally lower, as the buyer needs room to prepare and resell the car.

Why can’t you value my car?

We only show a value when there are enough similar cars for sale to work one out reliably. Rare, very old, imported or newly launched cars may not have enough comparable adverts, so we show no value rather than guess.

Does the valuation take the car’s history into account?

No. It assumes a clean history. Outstanding finance, an insurance write-off or a theft record can change what a car is worth. The Full History Report checks for all three.
