The ULEZ standard
London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers all London boroughs. A car that doesn’t meet the standard pays £12.50 for each day it is driven in the zone.

Cars in the DVLA historic vehicle tax class are exempt from the charge whatever their emissions. TfL makes the final decision on every vehicle.
Can I rely on a ULEZ check before buying?
It tells you whether the car should meet London’s ULEZ standard, based on its records. At £12.50 a day, a car that doesn’t meet it and is driven into the zone five days a week costs about £3,250 a year, so check before you buy. Other UK cities run their own clean air zones with their own rules, so a ULEZ answer doesn’t carry over.
What a ULEZ check can’t tell you is whether the car is safe to pay for. Outstanding finance, write-off history and stolen records aren’t held in public DVLA or DVSA records, so no free check can show them.
Before you hand over money, run a Full History Report to check the car’s history for finance, write-offs and theft.
Where does our ULEZ data come from?
- DVLA
- Fuel type, the Euro status where one is recorded, year of manufacture, first registration date and type approval, from the car’s DVLA record.
- TfL’s standard
- We apply TfL’s published ULEZ standard to those records. TfL has no public data feed, so the answer is our reading of its rules, and TfL’s vehicle checker makes the final decision.
- DVSA
- The MOT status, expiry date and every recorded MOT test.

Is the ULEZ check free?
Yes. It costs nothing and you don’t need an account or card details. The ULEZ status is in the free Basic Car Report, with the MOT history, tax and car details.
How do I check if a car is ULEZ compliant?
Enter the car’s registration at the top of this page. The Basic Car Report shows whether it meets the London ULEZ standard, with its Euro status, fuel and build year, or links to TfL’s checker when the records can’t settle it.
Is a Euro 5 diesel ULEZ compliant?
No. Diesel cars and vans need to meet Euro 6. A Euro 5 diesel pays the £12.50 daily charge when it is driven in the zone. Petrol cars only need Euro 4.
Are electric and hybrid cars ULEZ compliant?
Fully electric and hydrogen cars always meet the standard. A hybrid is judged on its engine: a petrol hybrid needs Euro 4 and a diesel hybrid needs Euro 6.
Why does the check sometimes send me to TfL?
When a car’s records can’t settle it, for example an older car with no Euro standard recorded, a used import or a vehicle over 3.5 tonnes, we don’t guess. The report links to TfL’s checker instead.
How much is the ULEZ charge?
£12.50 for each day a car that doesn’t meet the standard is driven in the zone. The ULEZ covers all London boroughs.
Are any cars exempt from the ULEZ?
Cars in the DVLA historic vehicle tax class are exempt whatever their emissions. Being over 40 years old isn’t enough on its own: the car has to be in that tax class. TfL also runs some exemptions and grace periods, including for some disabled tax classes.
Is this an official TfL checker?
No. Carpeep is not TfL. We apply TfL’s published standard to the car’s records, and TfL makes the final decision.
What’s the difference between a ULEZ check and a Full History Report?
A ULEZ check shows whether the car meets the ULEZ standard, with its MOT history, tax and car details, for free. The £15 Full History Report adds outstanding finance, write-off history, stolen status, previous owners, mileage checks, plate changes, and import, export and scrapped records.
