Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between a Basic Car Report and a Full History Report?

This Basic Car Report is free and built from public DVLA and DVSA records for OU18 XYP: its MOT history, the mileage recorded at each MOT, tax and SORN status, ULEZ status and safety recalls where available. The Full History Report adds the checks those public records can’t show: outstanding finance, insurance write-offs, police stolen records, previous owners, plate changes and mileage records from beyond the MOT.

How can I check if a car has outstanding finance or has been stolen?

Neither is in the Basic Car Report, because public DVLA and DVSA records don’t include finance agreements or police stolen reports; they come from separate finance and police data. The Full History Report checks both for OU18 XYP, along with write-offs and previous owners, before you hand over any money.

What should I check before buying a used car?

Start with the public checks in this report: the MOT history for repeat failures and advisories, mileage readings that rise steadily, tax and SORN status, and any outstanding safety recalls. Then check what public records don’t show: outstanding finance, insurance write-offs, stolen records and ownership history. Finally, see the car in person and make sure the V5C logbook and VIN match the car and the seller.

What should I check before buying a used BMW?

BMWs fail their MOT most often on lamps, reflectors and electrical equipment: 23% of their failures, against 25% for all cars. Tyres account for more of their failures than average, 22% against 13%. In this car’s MOT history above, look for failures and advisories in those areas and ask whether they were fixed.

Are BMWs reliable used cars?

MOT results are a useful public guide. In 2025, BMWs passed 79.3% of their initial MOT tests, 7 points above the 72.3% average for all cars and 18th of 63 makes. Older ones pass less often, 88.3% at 3 to 5 years old against 70.3% at 11 years and over, so how this car has been looked after matters most: its MOT history above is the best evidence. Compare every BMW model’s MOT record.
