How the 60 identifier works
Since September 2001 the UK has issued two age identifiers a year. Registrations issued from 1 March use the last two digits of the year. Registrations issued from 1 September use the same number plus fifty. That is why a September plate looks like a much later year than it is.
60 is 10 plus fifty, so it belongs to the September 2010 round and runs until the end of February 2011. The plate before it was 10, issued that March. The two letters before the identifier are the DVLA area code, and the three letters after it are random.
What to expect from a 60 plate car
Across 31.2 million MOT tests in the DVSA data, cars cover roughly 7,145 miles a year on average. On that basis a 60 plate car sitting at somewhere between 107,175 and 114,320 miles is ordinary for its age. Well below that is worth asking about rather than assuming is good news, because a low reading is the whole point of clocking a car.
Cars first registered between 1 March 2001 and 31 March 2017 are taxed on CO2 emission bands A to M, so two cars of the same age can cost very different amounts to tax. Low-emission cars from this era are among the cheapest on the road to keep taxed.
Why the plate is not proof of age
An age identifier tells you when the REGISTRATION was issued. It does not tell you when the vehicle in front of you was built or first registered, because registrations move. A private plate can be assigned to a car of any age, and a plate can be taken off one vehicle and put on another.
There is one hard rule that helps: the DVLA does not allow a registration to make a vehicle look newer than it is. So the identifier is a floor on the age, not the age itself. A car wearing a 60 plate could be much older. It cannot be newer.
- Date of first registration. The DVLA record, not the plate, is the answer.
- Plate transfers. A registration that has moved between vehicles is worth understanding before you buy.
- Mileage history. The reading taken at each MOT is what exposes a wound-back odometer.
- Outstanding finance. An unsettled agreement stays with the car, whatever plate it wears.
- Write-off and stolen markers. Neither appears on the V5C, and neither is visible on a viewing.
A Carpeep car history check reports all of that against the registration in one £15 report. If you just want the basic DVLA facts, the registration check page covers what a plate lookup returns.

60 plate FAQs
What year is a 60 plate?
A 60 plate was issued to vehicles first registered between 1 September 2010 and 28 February 2011.
Does the 60 plate prove how old a car is?
No. It tells you when that registration was issued, not when that particular vehicle was built or first registered. Registrations can be transferred between vehicles, so a car can wear an identifier that has nothing to do with its own age. The DVLA record of the date of first registration is the reliable answer, and it appears in a vehicle history check.
How do I check the real age of a car?
Enter the registration. A Carpeep report shows the recorded date of first registration and any plate transfers against the vehicle, alongside outstanding finance, insurance write-off markers, stolen markers, mileage from MOT readings and keeper history, for £15.
Why does a 60 plate start with a number over 50
Since September 2001 the UK has issued two age identifiers a year. March registrations use the last two digits of the year, and September registrations add 50 to them. 60 means 10 plus 50, so September 2010 onwards.
When does a 60 plate car need its first MOT?
A car needs its first MOT three years after first registration, so the earliest 60 plate cars became due from 1 September 2013. Every test after that adds a recorded mileage reading, which is what makes an odometer check possible.
Registration date ranges are published DVLA reference information. Average annual mileage is derived from the DVSA MOT Anonymised data set (class 4 initial tests), licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Tax and MOT rules summarised from GOV.UK guidance.
