What year is a 70 plate?

1 September 2020 to 28 February 2021. A 70 plate was issued to vehicles first registered in that window. Those cars are 5 to 6 years old today.

How the 70 identifier works

Since September 2001 the UK has issued two age identifiers a year. March registrations use the last two digits of the year. September registrations add fifty. 70 is 20 plus fifty, so it belongs to the September 2020 round and runs to the end of February 2021. The March plate before it was 20. The two letters before the identifier are the DVLA area code, and the three after it are random.

What to expect from a 70 plate car

Across 31.2 million MOT tests in the DVSA data, cars cover roughly 7,145 miles a year on average. On that basis a 70 plate car at 35,725 to 42,870 miles is ordinary for its age. A reading well below that is worth asking about, because a low reading is the whole point of clocking a car.

Cars registered on or after 1 April 2017 pay a one-off first-year rate based on CO2 emissions, then a flat standard rate every year after that. Cars with a list price over £40,000 when new also pay an additional rate for five years from the second licence. Since 1 April 2025 electric cars pay vehicle tax too.

Why the plate is not proof of age

An age identifier tells you when the registration was issued, not when the vehicle in front of you was built or first registered. A private plate can go on a car of any age, and a plate can move between vehicles. The one firm rule is that the DVLA will not let a registration make a vehicle look newer than it is. So a car wearing a 70 plate could be much older. It cannot be newer.

The recorded date of first registration is the real answer, and it sits in the vehicle record alongside any plate transfers.

70 plate FAQs

What year is a 70 plate?

A 70 plate was issued to vehicles first registered between 1 September 2020 and 28 February 2021.

Does a 70 plate prove how old a car is?

No. It tells you when that registration was issued, not when that particular vehicle was built or first registered. Registrations can be transferred between vehicles, so a car can wear an identifier that has nothing to do with its own age. The DVLA will not allow a plate that makes a vehicle look newer than it is, so the identifier is a minimum age, not the age itself. The recorded date of first registration is the reliable answer.

Why is a 70 plate a number over 50?

Since September 2001 the UK has issued two age identifiers a year. March registrations use the last two digits of the year, and September registrations add 50 to them. 70 is 20 plus 50, so September 2020 onwards.

When does a 70 plate car need its first MOT?

A car needs its first MOT three years after first registration, so the earliest 70 plate cars became due from 1 September 2023. Every test after that adds a recorded mileage reading.

Registration date ranges are published DVLA reference information. Average annual mileage is derived from the DVSA MOT Anonymised data set (class 4 initial tests), licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Tax and MOT rules summarised from GOV.UK guidance.
