Why a used minibus is worth checking first.
Most used minibuses in the UK come out of school runs, care homes, hotels, sports clubs and community transport schemes. They are typically Ford Transits, Mercedes Sprinters, Peugeot Boxers, Renault Masters and Iveco Dailys converted to nine, twelve, sixteen or seventeen seats, often with a tail lift or wheelchair tracking fitted by a specialist converter.
That history brings short cold journeys, constant stop-start driving and long spells parked up, which is a harder life than the mileage suggests. A check by registration shows the finance, write-off, stolen and MOT record for the registered vehicle. It cannot tell you whether the seat conversion or the lift has been maintained, so ask for that paperwork too.

The test class changes with seats

Most used minibuses started as panel vans. Ford Transit and Mercedes Sprinter conversions dominate the sixteen and seventeen seat end, while Peugeot Boxer, Citroen Relay, Renault Master and Iveco Daily bodies are common in community transport. Smaller nine seaters are usually VW Transporter Shuttle, Vauxhall Vivaro or Ford Tourneo shapes.
Ex-council, ex-school and ex-charity vehicles reach the market through auctions and dealer disposals, often on modest mileage with a thick test file behind them. Read the advisories for corrosion, brakes and suspension, then confirm the finance and write-off results before you commit to a price.

When to run a minibus history check.
Run it before you bid at auction, which is where a lot of ex-council, ex-school and ex-charity minibuses end up. Auction lots move fast and you rarely get long with the vehicle, so the finance and write-off results are worth having in advance.
Check the licence side separately. Drivers who passed a car test before 1997 usually hold D1 entitlement already, while newer licences need a D1 test or a permit scheme. The report covers the vehicle record, not who is allowed to drive it.

What MOT class does a minibus need?

Can I check finance on a used minibus?
