UK age identifier
What year is a P reg?
The letter P was used twice. As a prefix at the start of the plate it means the vehicle was first registered between 1 August 1996 and 31 July 1997. As a suffix at the end of the plate it means 1 August 1975 to 31 July 1976.

Prefix or suffix: telling them apart
Between 1963 and 1983 the year letter went at the END of the plate, after the numbers. Between 1983 and 2001 it moved to the START. The same letters were reused, which is why the letter P has two completely different answers about twenty years apart.
A P suffix plate reads as three letters, then up to three numbers, then P. A P prefix plate reads as P, then up to three numbers, then three letters. Neither system used the letters I, O, Q, U or Z as a year identifier.
Cars first registered before 1 March 2001 are taxed on engine size, with one rate up to 1549cc and a higher rate above it. Once a car is over 40 years old it can also apply for the historic vehicle tax class.
Buying a car this old
P suffix cars are over forty years old and can be declared as vehicles of historic interest, exempt from vehicle tax and, unless substantially changed, from the annual MOT. P prefix cars are not there yet, so they still need testing every year and still build a mileage record.
Older cars are also where registration transfers cluster. Plates from this era are attractive to cherished-number buyers, so a plate coming off a scrapped or rebuilt vehicle and onto another one is not unusual. That is worth confirming rather than assuming.
Why the plate is not proof of age
An age identifier tells you when the REGISTRATION was issued. It does not tell you when the vehicle in front of you was built or first registered, because registrations move. A private plate can be assigned to a car of any age, and a plate can be taken off one vehicle and put on another.
There is one hard rule that helps: the DVLA does not allow a registration to make a vehicle look newer than it is. So the identifier is a floor on the age, not the age itself. A car wearing a P reg could be much older. It cannot be newer.
- Date of first registration. The DVLA record, not the plate, is the answer.
- Plate transfers. A registration that has moved between vehicles is worth understanding before you buy.
- Mileage history. The reading taken at each MOT is what exposes a wound-back odometer.
- Outstanding finance. An unsettled agreement stays with the car, whatever plate it wears.
- Write-off and stolen markers. Neither appears on the V5C, and neither is visible on a viewing.
A Carpeep car history check reports all of that against the registration in one £15 report. If you just want the basic DVLA facts, the registration check page covers what a plate lookup returns.

P reg FAQs
What year is a P reg?
The letter P was used twice. As a prefix at the start of the plate it means the vehicle was first registered between 1 August 1996 and 31 July 1997. As a suffix at the end of the plate it means 1 August 1975 to 31 July 1976.
Does the P reg prove how old a car is?
No. It tells you when that registration was issued, not when that particular vehicle was built or first registered. Registrations can be transferred between vehicles, so a car can wear an identifier that has nothing to do with its own age. The DVLA record of the date of first registration is the reliable answer, and it appears in a vehicle history check.
How do I check the real age of a car?
Enter the registration. A Carpeep report shows the recorded date of first registration and any plate transfers against the vehicle, alongside outstanding finance, insurance write-off markers, stolen markers, mileage from MOT readings and keeper history, for £15.
How can I tell a P prefix from a P suffix?
Look at where the letter sits. A prefix plate puts the year letter first, followed by up to three numbers and three letters. A suffix plate puts three letters and up to three numbers first, with the year letter last. The two systems are about twenty years apart, so it changes the answer completely.
Registration date ranges are published DVLA reference information. Average annual mileage is derived from the DVSA MOT Anonymised data set (class 4 initial tests), licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Tax and MOT rules summarised from GOV.UK guidance.
