What year is an R reg?
August 1997 to July 1998 if the R is at the start of the plate, or August 1976 to July 1977 if it is at the end. The same letter was used twice, about twenty years apart.

Prefix or suffix: which one is it?
Between 1963 and 1983 the year letter went at the end of the plate. Between 1983 and 2001 it moved to the start. An R suffix plate reads as three letters, up to three numbers, then R. An R prefix plate reads as R, up to three numbers, then three letters. I, O, Q, U and Z were never used as year letters.
Cars first registered before 1 March 2001 are taxed on engine size, with one rate up to 1549cc and a higher rate above it. Once a car is over 40 years old it can also apply for the historic vehicle tax class.
Buying a car this old
R suffix cars are over forty years old and can be declared vehicles of historic interest, exempt from vehicle tax and, unless substantially changed, from the annual MOT. R prefix cars are not there yet, so they still need testing every year and still build a mileage record.
Plates from this era are popular with cherished-number buyers, so a registration moving from one vehicle to another is not unusual. Confirm it rather than assume it.
Why the plate is not proof of age
An age identifier tells you when the registration was issued, not when the vehicle in front of you was built or first registered. A private plate can go on a car of any age, and a plate can move between vehicles. The one firm rule is that the DVLA will not let a registration make a vehicle look newer than it is. So a car wearing an R reg could be much older. It cannot be newer.
The recorded date of first registration is the real answer, and it sits in the vehicle record alongside any plate transfers.

R reg FAQs
What year is an R reg?
The letter R was used twice. At the start of the plate it means first registered between 1 August 1997 and 31 July 1998. At the end of the plate it means 1 August 1976 to 31 July 1977.
Does an R reg prove how old a car is?
No. It tells you when that registration was issued, not when that particular vehicle was built or first registered. Registrations can be transferred between vehicles, so a car can wear an identifier that has nothing to do with its own age. The DVLA will not allow a plate that makes a vehicle look newer than it is, so the identifier is a minimum age, not the age itself. The recorded date of first registration is the reliable answer.
How can I tell an R prefix from an R suffix?
Look at where the letter sits. A prefix plate puts the year letter first, followed by up to three numbers and three letters. A suffix plate puts three letters and up to three numbers first, with the year letter last. The two systems are about twenty years apart.
Is an R reg car MOT exempt?
A vehicle over 40 years old can be declared a vehicle of historic interest, which makes it exempt from vehicle tax and, if it has not been substantially changed, from the annual MOT. R suffix cars qualify. R prefix cars do not yet qualify. Exemption is not automatic: the keeper has to declare it.
