What Does a Car Check Data Guarantee Cover?

A car check data guarantee is a promise about the data, not about the car. If the provider reports a specific fact wrongly, you relied on that report when you bought, and you lost money as a direct result, the provider compensates you up to a stated limit. It is not insurance on the vehicle. It pays nothing because the clutch failed, and nothing because you overpaid.

Quick answer

Cover applies to a short list of data points, normally outstanding finance, insurance write-off status and police stolen markers. Mileage is sometimes included and sometimes expressly excluded. A claim only works if you ran the check yourself before you bought, kept the report, can evidence a real financial loss, and told the provider inside its time limit. The headline number is a ceiling on what could ever be paid, not a sum anyone receives. Compare guarantees on their exclusions rather than on the figure in the advert.

What the guarantee is actually promising

Providers do not own the underlying records. Finance data comes from lenders reporting agreements to a register. Write-off markers come from insurers. Stolen markers come from police records. Each of those sources can be late, incomplete or wrong, and no provider can fix that at source. A data guarantee is the provider putting money behind its own handling of what it receives. Report a car as finance free when the register said otherwise, and the provider carries the consequence.

That framing explains every exclusion you will read later. Where there was never a record to report, there is nothing to guarantee.

What is usually covered

Three data points sit at the centre of almost every guarantee, because these are the failures that cost a buyer thousands on the day rather than hundreds over a year.

Data pointWhat goes wrong if it is reported incorrectly
Outstanding financeThe lender's claim is attached to the car, not the seller. It can be repossessed after you have paid in full.
Insurance write-offYou pay a clean car price for a Cat S or Cat N vehicle and lose the difference when you sell.
Stolen markerThe car can be seized and returned to its owner or insurer, with no compensation to you.
Mileage discrepancyCovered by some providers, excluded by others. Check the wording before you assume.

Two published examples, both read on each company's own site on 3 September 2026. HPI's published guarantee summary gives up to £30,000 where incorrect data affects title, such as theft or outstanding finance, and up to £15,000 for written off vehicles, with condition claims capped at £15,000 or 50% of market value, whichever is lower. A Carpeep report carries a £30,000 data guarantee covering outstanding finance, insurance write-off status and stolen status.

What is almost never covered

  • Mechanical condition, engine, gearbox, corrosion and everything else an inspection is for.
  • Damage that was repaired privately and never claimed on insurance, because no database ever held it.
  • Anything the source never recorded, including accidents settled in cash between drivers.
  • Seller fraud and misrepresentation. HPI's summary excludes loss "arisen as a result of a fraudulent transaction". Carpeep's terms likewise exclude misrepresentation or fraud by the seller.
  • Descriptive data. HPI's summary states the guarantee does not cover "the vehicle's descriptive information (including import status), mileage, value, V5 registration document checks".
  • Data added or corrected after your report was produced.
  • Indirect losses, inconvenience, lost time and any perceived drop in value.

The conditions that decide a claim

Guarantees are rarely refused on the headline. They are refused on the conditions, and those are all things you control at the time of purchase.

  • Run the check yourself, before you hand over money. A guarantee is not transferable, so the seller's printout protects the seller, not you.
  • Supply the VIN as well as the registration where the provider asks for it. HPI requires both for maximum cover, and requires you to check the VIN markings on the car against the V5.
  • Keep the report and the receipt. HPI asks for a written receipt signed by the seller showing who sold it, the vehicle, the mileage, the date and the price.
  • Buy privately from the registered keeper, at the address on the V5.
  • Pay a sensible price by a traceable method. HPI states that claims will not be considered if you paid 30% below retail market value.
  • Notify inside the time limit. Carpeep asks to be told within 30 days of the report being generated. HPI's guarantee is valid for two years from the date of the check.
  • Keep the car available. Selling it or altering it before the provider has reviewed the claim can end it.

The clause people miss. Almost every guarantee requires the check to have been bought before the purchase and to have been genuinely relied on. Running a check after something has gone wrong is the most common reason a claim never starts. All competitor terms quoted here were read on the provider's own site on 3 September 2026 and can change.

Why the limit is a ceiling, not a payout

A guarantee pays your actual direct financial loss, capped at the limit. Buy a £6,000 car with £4,000 of undisclosed finance registered against it and your loss is measured by what that error cost you, not by the number on the homepage. The cap matters only for expensive cars, and some providers scale it down further. HPI's 50% of market value ceiling on condition claims is a headline figure that shrinks once you read the sentence around it.

"£30,000 is the maximum a provider could ever pay on one report. It is not what a claim is worth."

How to compare two guarantees properly

Ignore the number for a moment and read four things instead.

Which data points are named. A guarantee that lists finance, write-off and theft is telling you exactly where it stands. A guarantee described only as covering "your purchase" is telling you less.

Whether it applies at the price you are paying. Tiers matter. On 3 September 2026, HPI listed a Basic Check at £9.99 without the guarantee, the full hpi check at £19.99 with the £30,000 guarantee, and a MultiCheck of three checks at £29.99. The cheapest option is not always the covered one.

The notification window. This is a genuine difference and worth stating plainly. HPI's published guarantee runs for two years from the date of the check. Carpeep asks to hear from you within 30 days of the report. On that single dimension HPI gives you longer, and if a claim window months after purchase matters to you, that should weigh in the decision.

What sits outside it. Add up the exclusions and see what is left. That remainder is the real product.

Is a data guarantee worth paying for

It is worth having, and it should not be the reason you choose a provider. The daily value of a check is the information itself. Seeing an active finance agreement, a Cat N marker or a mileage jump before you commit is what saves the money. The guarantee is the backstop for the day the record was wrong.

Carpeep costs £15 flat, with no tiers and no paid upgrades, and every report carries the £30,000 data guarantee. Nothing is held back for a higher tier. If you want to see what sits behind each marker first, read up on the finance check, the write-off check and the stolen car check, then run a full car history check before you pay for any car.

Key takeaways

  • A data guarantee covers reporting errors on named data points, not the condition or value of the car.
  • Finance, write-off and stolen status are the usual covered points. Mileage is covered by some providers and excluded by others.
  • You must run the check yourself before buying. Guarantees are not transferable, so a seller's report does not cover you.
  • Claims turn on evidence: the report, a signed receipt, a traceable payment and a purchase at a sensible price.
  • The headline figure is a maximum. Payouts are limited to actual direct loss, and some providers cap condition claims by vehicle value.
  • Compare providers on exclusions, tier coverage and notification deadlines, not on the number.
  • Every Carpeep report includes the £30,000 data guarantee at the same £15 price, with no upgrade tier.
