This is how a flagged record appears in a report. Hard-worked vans hide more than a clean panel suggests, so this is the part that matters before you pay.

What a Citroen Berlingo history check helps you spot.

A van that looks tidy on the forecourt can still carry finance, a wound-back odometer or a repaired write-off. These are the checks that surface it.

The V5C names the keeper

The logbook shows the registered keeper, not the legal owner. On a financed van those can be two different parties.

Read the mileage line

Take the MOT readings in order. A steady climb fits trade use. A sudden flat year does not.

Plate and colour

A private plate or a respray on a former livery van shows up on the record. Ask what was underneath it.

Citroen Berlingo history check

Britain's sole trader van.

The Berlingo has been the default first van for one man businesses since the 1990s. Gardeners, plumbers, locksmiths and mobile groomers buy them because they are cheap to run, easy to park and able to hold a Euro pallet in the load bay. The Enterprise trim, with air conditioning and parking sensors, sold in big numbers here.

Sole trader ownership cuts both ways. Some Berlingos have been looked after by the person whose living depended on them. Others were run into the ground, sold cheap and passed along the trade. The record separates the two, because every MOT carries a mileage and an advisory list, and finance and write-off markers stay with the van.

Risks to check on a used Citroen Berlingo.

These are the specific things worth confirming before you put any money down.

Finance in a trading name

A sole trader who bought on hire purchase is personally liable, and the agreement is registered against the van. If the business stopped trading before the balance was cleared, the marker is still there. Buying it does not clear the debt, and the finance company can recover the Berlingo.

Mileage wound back for resale

A worn out Berlingo is a cheap van, and the same van showing far fewer miles is worth real money. That gap is the motive for clocking. Carpeep lists every DVSA reading against its test date, so a figure that falls, or a year that barely moves, stands out straight away.

Repaired kerb and gate damage

Berlingos live in narrow lanes, tight yards and supermarket car parks. Sliding door damage and rear corner hits are common, and once the repair cost passes the van's value the insurer records a category. Cat N and legacy Cat C and D markers all appear with their dates.

Keeper history that does not match

An advert saying one careful owner should match the record. The report gives the number of previous keepers and the date of each change, so a van described as a retiring plumber's runabout that actually passed through four keepers in two years is easy to challenge.

What a Citroen Berlingo history check covers.

Every Carpeep report runs the same core checks against the registration. This is what each one tells you.

Finance

Flags any outstanding finance recorded against the vehicle, so you know whether a lender still has a legal claim.

Car finance check

Accident and write-off history

Shows any recorded accident or insurance write-off marker (Cat A, B, S or N), with the category and date.

Write-off check

Stolen status

Cross-references police records to flag any theft marker against the registration and VIN.

Stolen car check

Mileage history

Builds a mileage timeline from MOT readings so you can spot drops or inconsistencies that point to clocking.

Mileage check

MOT history

Full pass and fail history, advisories and the mileage recorded at each test.

MOT check

Keeper & import status

Keeper history, import and export markers, plate changes and the recorded vehicle details.

Import check

Before you buy

When to check a used Berlingo.

Check before you view a private sale. Berlingos sell fast on local ads and cash changes hands quickly. The registration is enough to see the keeper history, the DVSA mileage readings and any finance, write-off or stolen marker before you arrange to meet.

Check again at handover if time has passed since the first report. Markers are added as they are reported, so a theft record or a new finance agreement can appear after you looked. For £15 you can run a second report on the morning you collect the van.

Where our data comes from.

Always from official records. We do not create, edit or estimate any data.

DVLA

Registration, keeper history, import and export status and recorded vehicle details.

DVSA

Full MOT test history including results, advisories and mileage at each test.

Insurance industry records

Recorded write-off markers such as Cat A, B, S and N from insurance industry records.

UK finance lenders

Outstanding finance agreements including HP, PCP and conditional sale records.

Police stolen vehicle records

Stolen vehicle markers from UK police databases, checked against the registration and VIN.

Vehicle identity checks

VIN and registration cross-referenced to flag plate changes, cloning or identity mismatches.

Citroen Berlingo History Check FAQs

Does the report cover the Berlingo Multispace?

Yes. The passenger versions, from the old Multispace to the current Berlingo people carrier, are checked in exactly the same way as the panel van. Enter the registration and the report returns the markers, keeper history, MOT readings and specification held for that vehicle, whichever body style it was registered as.

Should I avoid a Cat N Berlingo?

Not automatically. Cat N means the damage was not structural, and on a small van it can be a door skin or a bumper and lights. The marker is permanent, it affects resale and some insurers price it higher. Get the repair evidence, inspect it properly and pay a category price, not a clean one.

Can I check a Berlingo without the V5C?

Yes. The registration number is all you need to run the report, so you can check a van from an online advert before you even contact the seller. When you view it, match the VIN on the vehicle against the one on the report and against the V5C the seller shows you.

Does the report include a service history?

No. Service records sit with garages and owners, not with DVLA or DVSA, so a history check cannot produce them. The MOT history is the next best thing. It shows the test dates, the mileage at each test, the failures and the advisories, which tells you plenty about how a working Berlingo was treated.

The van has a private plate. Does that hide its past?

No. Plate transfers are recorded, and the report shows previous registration marks where they are held, along with the date of the change. A new plate on a former livery van is common and not sinister on its own, but a transfer plus a colour change is worth asking about.
