What a Subaru history check helps you spot.

The risks that cost buyers the most are the ones you cannot spot on a test drive. These are the ones the report puts in front of you.

Japanese imports

A large share of quick Imprezas came from Japan. Import markers appear on the record, and the UK mileage trail only starts at registration here.

Theft and identity

Turbo Imprezas have long been a target. Stolen markers and a VIN cross-reference are the fastest way to test a seller's story.

Finance on newer models

Forester and XV buyers often use PCP or hire purchase. Check no lender still has a claim before money changes hands.

Subaru history check

Subaru buyers are buying history, not just a car.

Subaru occupies two very different corners of the UK market. One is the rally derived Impreza and WRX STI, bought by enthusiasts, tuned, tracked and traded between them for years. The other is the Forester, Outback and XV, symmetrical four wheel drive workhorses that live in the countryside, tow trailers and cover long miles in weather that stops other cars.

Both make the paperwork matter. Performance cars attract hard use, modification and theft, and many arrived from Japan rather than a UK dealer. Rural estates rack up mileage and corrosion that no valet hides. The registration gives you the recorded facts on either one before you commit money.

Risks to check on a used Subaru.

Every used Subaru has a history. These are the specific things worth confirming before you commit.

Grey imports and short mileage trails

Plenty of Version 5, Version 6, WRX and STI models were personally imported from Japan. DVSA mileage readings only start once the car is registered in the UK, so an import can show a short, tidy trail behind a life you cannot see. Check the import marker and the registration date together.

Crashed and rebuilt performance cars

Fast Imprezas get driven hard and crashed, and good ones are now worth enough to make rebuilding a damaged shell pay. Write-off markers show whether an insurer has already settled on the car. Nothing about the badge or the paint tells you that on a viewing.

Farm miles on Forester and Outback

These are tow cars and green lane cars in real use, not soft crossovers. Look through the MOT advisories for underbody corrosion, suspension wear and brake notes appearing year after year, and read the mileage pattern for the long annual distances these owners genuinely cover.

Long ownership, then a sudden churn

Subarus tend to be kept for years by people who wanted one. When the keeper record instead shows three or four changes in quick succession, something has usually gone wrong. Keeper history and keeper change dates give you that pattern in a way an advert never will.

What a Subaru history check covers.

Every Carpeep report runs the same core checks against the registration. This is what each one tells you.

Stolen car check

Mileage history

Full pass and fail history, advisories and the mileage recorded at each test.

MOT check

Keeper & import status

Keeper history, import and export markers, plate changes and the recorded vehicle details.

Import check

Before you buy

When to run a Subaru history check.

Run it as soon as you have a registration, before travelling. Enthusiast cars sell fast and sellers push for a quick decision, which is exactly when import markers, previous write-offs and outstanding finance get skated over.

Check again before you pay. On an older imported STI the identity data is the point: you want the VIN and the recorded details to agree with the car and its paperwork before any cash leaves your hands.

Where our data comes from.

Always from official records. We do not create, edit or estimate any data.

DVLA

Registration, keeper history, import and export status and recorded vehicle details.

DVSA

Full MOT test history including results, advisories and mileage at each test.

Insurance industry records

Recorded write-off markers such as Cat A, B, S and N from insurance industry records.

UK finance lenders

Outstanding finance agreements including HP, PCP and conditional sale records.

Police stolen vehicle records

Stolen vehicle markers from UK police databases, checked against the registration and VIN.

Vehicle identity checks

VIN and registration cross-referenced to flag plate changes, cloning or identity mismatches.

Subaru History Check FAQs

How do I check a used Subaru's history?

Enter the registration and the report covers outstanding finance, insurance write-off markers, police stolen markers, mileage from DVSA MOT readings, the full MOT test history with advisories, keeper history, plate transfers, colour changes and import or export markers. It works the same on a WRX STI as on a Forester or an Outback.

Can I check whether an Impreza is a Japanese import?

Yes. Import and export markers held against the registration appear in the report. On an imported Impreza the mileage record is the thing to think about, because DVSA readings only begin once the car is registered in the UK. Anything before that date is not in the MOT data and needs supporting paperwork from the seller.

Will the report tell me if a WRX STI has been modified?

No. Modifications are not recorded in the data Carpeep holds, so nobody can confirm a remap or a bigger turbo from a registration. What you do get is the MOT history and advisories, previous write-off markers, mileage readings and keeper history, which together give a strong sense of how hard the car has lived.

Can I check finance on a Forester or XV?

Yes. Any hire purchase, PCP or conditional sale agreement recorded against the registration is flagged. Newer Foresters and XVs are frequently sold within their original agreement, and a private seller cannot give you clear title until the lender is settled. Check before you pay rather than after.

Is a history check worth it on an older Subaru?

Yes, arguably more so. Older cars have had more owners, more repairs and more chances to be written off, scrapped or exported and brought back. The report shows scrapped and destroyed markers, write-off categories, mileage readings across the MOT record and every keeper change date on the vehicle.
