The other is the Forester, Outback and XV, symmetrical four wheel drive workhorses that live in the countryside, tow trailers and cover long miles in weather that stops other cars.
Both make the paperwork matter. Performance cars attract hard use, modification and theft, and many arrived from Japan rather than a UK dealer. Rural estates rack up mileage and corrosion that no valet hides. The registration gives you the recorded facts on either one before you commit money.

Grey imports and short mileage trails
Plenty of Version 5, Version 6, WRX and STI models were personally imported from Japan. DVSA mileage readings only start once the car is registered in the UK, so an import can show a short, tidy trail behind a life you cannot see. Check the import marker and the registration date together.
Crashed and rebuilt performance cars
Fast Imprezas get driven hard and crashed, and good ones are now worth enough to make rebuilding a damaged shell pay. Write-off markers show whether an insurer has already settled on the car. Nothing about the badge or the paint tells you that on a viewing.
Farm miles on Forester and Outback
These are tow cars and green lane cars in real use, not soft crossovers. Look through the MOT advisories for underbody corrosion, suspension wear and brake notes appearing year after year, and read the mileage pattern for the long annual distances these owners genuinely cover.
Long ownership, then a sudden churn

The two halves of the Subaru market behave very differently.
Impreza turbos, the WRX and the STI are collector territory now, priced on condition and originality rather than age. Standard non turbo Imprezas and older Legacys sit at the other end, worth little enough that any real damage ends their life. Forester, Outback and XV make up most of the everyday listings, usually sold by owners who kept them a long time.
For a performance car, spend your attention on identity, import status and write-off markers. For a Forester or Outback, mileage and MOT advisories tell the story, because these cars are bought to be used and a low reading on a fifteen year old estate deserves questions. Before you buy
When to run a Subaru history check.
Run it as soon as you have a registration, before travelling. Enthusiast cars sell fast and sellers push for a quick decision, which is exactly when import markers, previous write-offs and outstanding finance get skated over.
Check again before you pay. On an older imported STI the identity data is the point: you want the VIN and the recorded details to agree with the car and its paperwork before any cash leaves your hands.

How do I check a used Subaru's history?

It works the same on a WRX STI as on a Forester or an Outback.
Can I check whether an Impreza is a Japanese import?
Yes. Import and export markers held against the registration appear in the report. On an imported Impreza the mileage record is the thing to think about, because DVSA readings only begin once the car is registered in the UK. Anything before that date is not in the MOT data and needs supporting paperwork from the seller.
Will the report tell me if a WRX STI has been modified?
No. Modifications are not recorded in the data Carpeep holds, so nobody can confirm a remap or a bigger turbo from a registration. What you do get is the MOT history and advisories, previous write-off markers, mileage readings and keeper history, which together give a strong sense of how hard the car has lived.
Can I check finance on a Forester or XV?
Yes. Any hire purchase, PCP or conditional sale agreement recorded against the registration is flagged. Newer Foresters and XVs are frequently sold within their original agreement, and a private seller cannot give you clear title until the lender is settled. Check before you pay rather than after.
Is a history check worth it on an older Subaru?
Yes, arguably more so. Older cars have had more owners, more repairs and more chances to be written off, scrapped or exported and brought back. The report shows scrapped and destroyed markers, write-off categories, mileage readings across the MOT record and every keeper change date on the vehicle.
