What a MG history check helps you spot.

The risks that cost buyers the most are the ones you cannot spot on a test drive. These are the ones the report puts in front of you.

Still on the original deal

Most MG4 and ZS EV cars are only a few years old. The first finance agreement is often still running.

Fast depreciation

Heavy discounting on new MGs drags used values down. Balances can end up larger than the car is worth.

Classic MOT gaps

An MGB over forty years old can be MOT exempt. The mileage trail stops where the testing does.

MG history check

Two different MGs, two different risks.

The MG badge covers two separate used markets. One is the modern SAIC built range, the MG3, ZS, HS, MG4 and MG5, which grew from a curiosity into a mainstream choice on UK forecourts. These cars are young. Most were bought on finance, most are still inside that first agreement, and very few have reached a third registered keeper.

The other MG is the old one. MGB, Midget, MGF and TF cars pass between enthusiasts, get restored, rebuilt and sometimes rebodied, and identity questions follow. Anything over forty years old can be declared exempt from MOT, which quietly ends the mileage record most buyers rely on. Check what the DVSA file actually holds before you trust a stated figure.

Risks to check on a used MG.

Every used MG has a history. These are the specific things worth confirming before you commit.

Still inside the first agreement

The modern range is new enough that a large share of used stock has an active PCP or hire purchase behind it. An MG4 or ZS EV sold privately at three years old is exactly the car where a balance is likely. Get the settlement figure in writing before any money moves.

Negative equity sellers

MG competes hard on new price, and steep discounting pulls used values down with it. Owners who owe more than the car fetches sometimes try to sell privately and settle later, or not at all. That is the situation where an outstanding agreement follows the car to the next buyer.

EV repair costs and write-offs

Damage near a traction battery pushes repair costs up quickly, and insurers write off electric cars that look superficially fine. MG4 and ZS EV examples with Cat S or Cat N markers are already circulating. Read the marker and the date, then ask who repaired the car and what was replaced.

Classic identity questions

MGB and Midget restorations can involve new shells, swapped panels and mixed donor parts, and a car can end up carrying a registration its bodywork never wore. Check the chassis number against the record, look at the keeper history, and treat a fresh V5C with a thin trail behind it as a question.

Flags any outstanding finance recorded against the vehicle, so you know whether a lender still has a legal claim.

Car finance check

Import check

Before you buy

When to run an MG history check.

Run it before you view, whichever MG you are chasing. On a modern MG4 or HS the finance position is the first thing to settle. On a classic MGB or MGF the identity and keeper trail matter more than anything on the advert.

Ex demonstrator and ex fleet MGs reach the used market quickly, often through independent dealers rather than the franchised network. A £15 check gives you the finance, write-off, stolen and mileage record on the vehicle itself, whoever is holding the keys.

MG History Check FAQs

Is a used MG likely to have outstanding finance?

The odds are higher than on an older brand, simply because the cars are young. Most MG3, ZS, HS, MG4 and MG5 examples on the used market were first sold on PCP or hire purchase, and those agreements commonly run three or four years. The report flags any active agreement recorded against the registration.

Does the check work on a classic MGB?

Yes, as long as the car is on the DVLA record with a registration. You get keeper history, plate transfers, colour changes, stolen and write-off markers, import records and whatever MOT history exists. Cars over forty years old can be MOT exempt, so the test and mileage trail may stop at the point the owner declared exemption.

Can I see if an MG4 has been written off?

Yes. The report shows insurance write-off markers, including Cat A, Cat B, Cat S and Cat N and the older Cat C and Cat D, along with the date recorded. On an electric car that matters more than usual, because damage around the battery pack drives repair costs and salvage decisions.

Does the report show MG recalls or battery warranty?

No. Carpeep does not hold recall status or warranty records. Check outstanding recalls through the DVSA vehicle recall service and ask an MG dealer about the remaining battery and vehicle warranty using the VIN. The report covers finance, markers, mileage, keepers, identity, tax status and specification.

How many keepers should a used MG5 have?

Few, if it is genuinely a private car. The MG5 estate is also popular with private hire drivers and small fleets, so a short run of keepers combined with heavy annual mileage points to working use. The report gives keeper count and change dates so you can see how the car has moved.
